So how did the initial trader become profitable when there was no profitable trader that preceded him to instruct him to be profitable? There would be no profitable traders at all. Some people today will need to be told what to do, others blaze their own trail. I'm not saying there aren't two sides to the coin, so I'm saying you will find. Various strokes for different folks. I still maintain that the most profound moments of understanding won't come from what someone tells you or what you read in a book, they will come from your own observations. But if you believe different I'm okay with that.

I believe that in talking about this subject we've failed to factor in two important areas of trading: motive for trading along with also a trader's lifecycle.

Let us look at lifecycle first: In case you're a beginner, the quickest way to be develop a competent (always profitable) trader is together with the training of a mentor. You could have the ability to learn the very same skills by studying sites or books, then trying out these thoughts in trading, seeing what works and what doesn't, refining your system and trying again, etc. -- but that's a lot more time consuming method and doesn't necessarily produce a greater understanding of the market than learning from a mentor. I really don't think that Yo-Yo Ma stated,”Only give me the cello; I will get online and figure out this myself”?

As soon as you have become a competent trader, you might want to obtain a higher level of experience. Here is the point where independent thinking, your own experimentation and expertise become significant. Now you might be motivated by a desire to increase your profits, but your motivation also comprises a desire to be. Trading is the area in which you exhibit experience and your skill and gets about that you are as a individual. Following quite a few years in the level of expert, you might decide to take another step in a trader's lifecycle and become a mentor to other people.

Now take into consideration the question we've been discussing, do you need a mentor, from the point of view of a mentor. Do you believe a mentor would advise a newcomer find out what they can learn and to simply get on the web? Or do you believe the mentor would believe he/she could offer a learning environment where a start trader could benefit from his/her knowledge and years of expertise?

Let us go back to the question of the reason behind trading. We discussed the person who would like to become an expert, but imagine if your motivation is to earn money? Using a mentor is the fastest way to get there. As soon as you reach the level of being profitable, you would stop here on your development as a trader -- which would be OK. You continue to make money and make time to enjoy whatever money buys you and your family. Mission accomplished.
